Minimum wage for Filipina maids puts damper on hires in GCC

A minimum wage of $400 (QR 1500) a month for Filipina housemaids in the UAE may to be putting employers off, according to manpower agencies in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

One agency has told The National that its previous average of 100 new placements for Filipina maids each month has now shrunk to 20.

The unnamed agent adds that employers generally hire more than one maid “and cannot afford to pay $400 to each one.”

Employers now favour domestic workers from India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka, says the agent. These governments have set lower minimum wage targets - DH 1,100, 800 and 825 a month respectively.

  1. Of course it's going to put off employers, who plans this stuff!?

This is the first minimum wage I've ever heard of which is applied on the basis nationality, what exactly is the objective of this odd wage law??

Talk about destructive government intervention, smh.

    1. Not sure if you got that, but it's actually the filipino government that has been trying to protect their housekeepers in the GCC by demanding that employers pay them $400+. To be fair housekeepers in this region do need more protection, although I think abuse of rights is the bigger issue that needs to be tackled.
