Raid on unlicensed factory making fake cleaning products

Doha: The Consumer Protection Department has swooped on an illegal factory making spurious and poor-quality cleaning products being sold by 11 outlets of a major retailer in the country, officials said yesterday.
.
The products seized from the factory in Industrial Area and the outlets bore the labels “Hand Sanitizer”, “Disinfectant”, “Carpet Shampoo” , “Thick Bleach “ and “Hand Wash”. The products did not match the Consumer Protection Department’s quality standards, the Ministry of Business and Trade, of which the Consumer Protection Department is a part, said.
.
The raids were part of the ministry’s inspection campaign in the markets and commercial centres to protect the consumers from products of poor quality.
.
The team raided eleven branches of the popular retailer and confiscated a large quantity of products that failed to display the mandatory information — country of origin, production and expiry dates, which according to the Ministry, violates article (7) of Law No (8) of 2008 on consumer protection. The raid on the factory — that led to detergent and cleaning products being seized — came after the goods were found on the shelves of the retailer. The factory was violating all mandatory quality standards. The inspection team found the manufacturers using sterilizing hand gels past their expiry date to produce different cleaning products. They were also found recycling expired products with other ‘changing agents’ to make the merchandise.
