Oman National Rail Project to offer construction bonanza

Massive lengths of rail tunnels, viaducts, rail bridges and wadi bridges will account for a significant chunk of the estimated RO 6 billion cost of the Oman National Railway Project, the Observer has learnt.

As many as nine rail tunnels, extending a total estimated distance of a staggering 6 kilometres, are envisaged at key locations across the 1,061-kilometre length of the national railway network during Phase 1 of its implementation.

In addition, around 17 kilometres of viaducts (bridge spanning a wide valley and consisting of a set of arches supported by piers or towers) are required to be constructed in rugged parts of the country traversed by the rail network. Furthermore, with around 20 kilometres of rail bridges and 15 kilometres of wadi bridges envisioned elsewhere along the length of the network, the Oman National Railway project is expected to live up to its billing as the country’s largest and most expensive infrastructure undertaking in its modern history.

A tender floated by the government last week inviting bids for a contract to undertake the preliminary design of the rail network has elicited strong interest from local and international engineering consultancy firms.
