Shoura Council calls for increase in gas production
Saudi Arabia’s Shoura Council has ordered an increase in the production of gas to help meet the kingdom’s burgeoning demand, according to Arab News.
The council, which makes legislative proposals to King Abdullah, also said more oil refineries were needed to help cope with the increasing demand for oil and gas.
Energy demands are soaring in the Gulf’s most populous country, with gas particularly needed for power generation, water desalination and petrochemical industries.
Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest oil exporter but has only a modest gas output and so far has not managed to sufficiently increase gas production to replace conventional energy for planned petrochemical and electricity-generating projects.
