Global demand for natural gas ‘will rise nearly 50% by 2035’

Global demand for natural gas will rise nearly 50% to 190 trillion cubic feet (tcf) in 2035, compared to 130tcf now, said HE the Minister for Energy Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada.

Fossil fuel-based hydrocarbons currently account for about 83% of global energy consumption. While cleaner energy sources are expected to meet a growing share of demand over the coming decades, fossil fuels are forecast to continue to meet more than 80% of the world’s energy needs even after two decades, al-Sada said at the 10th Natural Gas Conversion Symposium at the RitzCarlton yesterday.

“Within the portfolio of fossil fuels, it is natural gas, which provides the most potent option for realising a sustainable energy solution. This is based on the fact that it is the cleanest, most efficient and versatile of all fossil fuels. Natural gas forms the perfect complement to renewable energy and is the most convenient bridge between a carbon intense present and a de-carbonised future, al-Sada said.
