Accidents in Saudi kill more than violence in Iraq


Traffic accidents in Saudi Arabia killed 7,153 people in 2011 more than the number of fatalities in Iraq which reached 4,200 in the same year, Arab News reported, citing Zuhair Sharaf, director of the Madinah Traffic Department.

About 17 people are killed on the road every day in the kingdom and more than 68,000 are injured annually, the newspaper reported, citing Sharaf.

More than 86,000 people have been killed in Saudi Arabia over the last two decades, as a result of accidents on the road.

Financial losses from the accidents are estimated at about SAR 13bn a year ($3.46bn), the newspaper cited Sharaf as saying.
